Design Consultation
Experienced design guidance, right when you need it.
Not every project needs a full-service designer. You may be midway through a renovation and want a second opinion on tile before placing an order. You may have lived with a room for a while and still be unsure why it doesn't feel quite right. Or you may be working with a contractor and want a designer available to answer questions and help keep decisions moving. Sometimes a focused conversation is all you need to move forward with confidence.
This is our most flexible offering. You get focused, professional design guidance for the part of your project that needs attention, without committing to a long-term engagement or paying for services you don't need. For homeowners and renovators throughout San Luis Obispo County and the Central Coast, it's a practical way to make more confident decisions at the moments they matter most.
What's Available
Design Consultation Sessions These are hands-on working sessions designed around your questions. Bring photos, paint samples, a floor plan, a sourcing shortlist, or whatever you'd like to work through. We'll review the options with you and provide clear direction and specific recommendations. A little preparation can help us cover a lot of ground. Consultations are available in person for clients in San Luis Obispo County and virtually for clients anywhere.
Layout Refinement If a room doesn't feel right, the layout may be part of the reason. Furniture scale, traffic paths, and competing focal points can all affect how a space functions. We assess the arrangement and develop a more effective layout, either during a consultation or as a standalone deliverable with a revised floor plan.
Finish Selection Support Paint colors, tile, flooring, countertops, and hardware are important decisions, and they can be difficult to evaluate one at a time. We help narrow the options, explain why certain choices work well together, and provide a clear direction you can feel confident about. This can be especially useful when you're working to a contractor's timeline and need to keep the project moving.
Sourcing Direction You know what you're looking for but you can't find the right version of it. We know where to look. Specific product recommendations, vendor sources, trade resources, and specialty retailers you may not have thought to explore. We can also evaluate pieces you've already found and give you an honest read on whether they're the right call.
Short-Term Project Support For homeowners managing their own renovation who want a designer available to answer contractor questions, weigh in on unexpected site conditions, and keep decisions from being made by default, we offer short-term coordination support billed hourly with clear scope and regular check-ins.
Pre-Purchase Review Considering a custom piece, tile order, or lighting selection and would like a second opinion before committing? We evaluate it in the context of your space and offer clear, practical guidance. This is particularly helpful for made-to-order items that may not be returnable.
The value of the right call at the right moment
Many design frustrations begin with small decisions: a paint color that looks different once it's on the wall, a sofa that takes up more room than expected, or a finish that doesn't quite work with the rest of the space. These issues can often be corrected, but doing so may cost more time and money than getting the decision right at the start.
A well-timed consultation brings clarity when you might otherwise be left guessing. Many of our full-service clients began with a single session, finding that a little expert guidance helped them move forward with greater confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
A focused, well-prepared session can help resolve several decisions. Clients who bring clear questions, reference photos, and measurements tend to get the most from their time. If you're not sure how to prepare, we'll help you get ready before we meet.
-
Both. In-person sessions are available for clients in San Luis Obispo County and the surrounding Central Coast, including Arroyo Grande, Pismo Beach, Paso Robles, Atascadero, and Santa Barbara. Virtual sessions are available for clients anywhere. Both formats are genuinely productive
-
No. You can book a single session and that's the whole commitment. Some clients come back regularly throughout a project. Others need one conversation and take it from there. Both are completely fine.
-
Consultations and a-la-carte services are billed at $350 per hour. For defined, short-term engagements, we'll provide an estimated range of hours upfront, track our time carefully, and only bill for the time spent. Larger design projects typically begin at around $5,000, with the final scope and investment depending on the needs of your project.
-
Yes, and it often does. Many of our full-service clients started with a single session. Any hours paid for consultation apply as a credit toward a full-service agreement if you decide to move forward.
-
That's exactly what this service is designed for. Bring us the specific question, whether it's one paint color, a tile selection, or a piece of furniture that isn't quite working, and we'll help you find a clear path forward.
-
Start here. A consultation is often the right first step even when you're not sure what kind of support your project needs. We'll help you figure it out, and we'll be honest if a broader engagement makes sense, but only if it genuinely does.
