Spaces guests remember, designed to work beautifully behind the scenes.
The best hospitality spaces make people feel something the moment they walk in. A boutique hotel that feels like a retreat. A vacation rental that makes guests want to come back every year. A restaurant where the atmosphere is as thoughtfully considered as the experience itself. These spaces don't happen by accident. They're the result of hundreds of design decisions working together, from the overall layout to the texture of a chair, the quality of the light, and the way a room feels at the end of a long day.
At Honeycomb Home Design, we approach hospitality design with the same care we bring to residential interiors, paired with a clear understanding that these spaces have to do more than look beautiful. They need to welcome guests, support the people who operate them, hold up to frequent use, and reflect the character of the property or business. Every decision has to earn its place.
Based in Arroyo Grande, we work with property owners, developers, and business owners throughout San Luis Obispo County and California's Central Coast to create hospitality environments that feel distinctive, function thoughtfully, and make a lasting impression. Whether you're developing a new concept, refreshing an existing property, or preparing a vacation rental for the market, we help bring the vision together with a cohesive design and a well-managed process.
What's Included
Concept Development and Design Direction Every successful hospitality project starts with a clear point of view. We work with you to understand the property, the intended guest, the experience you want to create, and what will make the space memorable. From there, we develop a cohesive design direction that establishes the palette, materials, furniture, lighting, and overall atmosphere. The goal isn't to follow a trend or apply a signature look. It's to create a space with its own identity, one that feels considered from the moment guests arrive.
Space Planning and Guest Experience A hospitality space needs to feel intuitive. Guests should understand where to go, feel comfortable settling in, and move through the property naturally. We develop layouts that support the way the space will be used, considering circulation, furniture placement, gathering areas, privacy, and the relationship between rooms and shared spaces. For accommodations, that means thinking through the full guest experience, from arrival and unpacking to sleeping, relaxing, and getting ready for the day. For restaurants and other commercial hospitality spaces, it means balancing atmosphere with the practical demands of daily operations.
Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E) Furniture and fixtures have a significant influence on both the character and performance of a hospitality space. We source and specify pieces that support the design concept while taking durability, comfort, maintenance, scale, and budget into account. A beautiful chair still needs to be comfortable. A dining table needs to suit the way the room functions. Lighting needs to create the right atmosphere while serving a practical purpose. We bring these considerations together in a coordinated selection, with clear specifications to support purchasing and implementation.
Materials and Finish Selections The materials in a hospitality environment need to look good and stand up to real use. Flooring, wall finishes, upholstery, countertops, hardware, and other surfaces all contribute to the experience of the space, but they also affect maintenance, longevity, and operating costs. We help you evaluate these decisions in context, balancing the aesthetic direction with the realities of the property. The result is a finish palette that feels cohesive and elevated without losing sight of how the space will perform over time.
Lighting and Layered Details Lighting can completely change how a space feels. Warm, layered light can make a guest room feel restful, a lobby feel welcoming, or a restaurant feel intimate without becoming dim or impractical. We consider natural light, ambient lighting, task lighting, and decorative fixtures as part of the overall design rather than treating them as separate decisions. We also look at the smaller details that help a property feel complete, including textiles, window treatments, artwork, accessories, and the transitions between spaces.
Contractor and Vendor Coordination A strong design concept needs to translate into a finished space without losing the details that made it work in the first place. We coordinate with your contractor and relevant vendors throughout the process, answer design questions, review selections and shop drawings where applicable, and help resolve decisions as the project develops. We stay involved so the design intent remains clear and the finished environment feels cohesive. Our role is to be a thoughtful, communicative partner to the team bringing the project to life.
Finishing and Styling The final layer is often what makes a hospitality space feel distinctive rather than simply finished. Artwork, accessories, textiles, and carefully chosen objects help establish a sense of place and give guests something to connect with. We bring these elements together with an eye for balance and restraint, creating an environment that feels welcoming and thoughtfully composed rather than overly decorated.
Why clients on the Central Coast work with us
We run a small studio by design, so the principal designer stays involved from the first conversation through final installation. You work directly with the person who understands your business, your goals, and the details that matter to you, creating continuity as the project moves forward.
Clients appreciate our clear, practical communication. We'll let you know when a selection needs another look, when the budget may need to shift, or when a decision could create challenges later. We work to address questions early and keep you informed as the project develops, so you can make decisions with confidence.
We also know the Central Coast and have built relationships with local vendors, fabricators, and contractors over years of work in the region. That experience helps us connect clients with the right people and support a smoother, more consistent project from start to finish.
Frequently Asked Questions

We work with a range of hospitality environments, including vacation rentals, boutique accommodations, restaurants, and other guest-focused spaces. The right fit depends on the project's scope, timeline, and design needs. Reach out with a little information about your property, and we'll help you determine whether our services are a good match.
-
Yes. Thoughtful design can make a vacation rental more comfortable for guests while helping the property stand out in a competitive market. We consider the overall guest experience, furniture layout, durability, storage, lighting, and the details that make a stay feel special. The goal is a property that photographs well, feels welcoming in person, and works for the people staying there.
-
Absolutely. We regularly collaborate with contractors and other professionals involved in a project. We provide clear design direction and specifications, communicate throughout the process, and help address design decisions as they arise. We aim to make the working relationship productive and keep the finished design aligned with the original vision.
-
Yes. Not every property needs to start from scratch. Sometimes the layout is working, but the furnishings, finishes, lighting, or overall presentation need attention. We'll assess the existing space, identify the changes likely to make the biggest difference, and recommend an appropriate scope of work. The goal is to invest thoughtfully rather than replace things that are already doing their job.
-
Design fees are billed at $200 per hour. The total depends on the size and complexity of the project, the services involved, and the level of coordination required. We provide a realistic estimate at the outset so you have a clear understanding of the expected design investment. Furniture, materials, construction, and other project expenses are separate. We discuss budget early and keep you informed as decisions are made.
-
As early as possible, ideally while the project's scope, layout, and budget are still being developed. Early design involvement helps align the aesthetic direction with practical requirements before decisions become expensive to change. If you're working with an existing property or a project that's already underway, it's still worth having a conversation about where design support could make the greatest difference.

Honeycomb Home Design provides interior design services and design documentation appropriate to the agreed scope. We do not act as architect of record or provide engineering stamps. Depending on the project and local requirements, you may need an architect, engineer, or other licensed professional for additional services and approvals. We'll communicate those boundaries clearly and coordinate with the appropriate professionals as needed.
